Free for every scholar, fellow and researcher

Bring order to everything your research demands.

Deadlines in a calendar, tasks in a to-do app, ideas in a notebook, papers in Zotero, drafts in Word. ScholarQuestor gives all of it one calm home, so you always know what needs you today — and never lose an idea or an insight again.

  • Free to use
  • No credit card
  • No ads
  • Syncs with your Zotero library
  • Two-way Google Calendar sync
  • Works with Claude, ChatGPT & Gemini
  • Exports finished drafts to Word

Sound familiar?

Doing research shouldn’t mean managing ten tools.

Every scholar ends up with the same scatter. The cost isn’t the clutter — it’s the thinking you do twice because you couldn’t find where you did it the first time.

  • Deadlines live in your head and across three calendars.

One Overview shows what is late, due this week and blocked — before anyone has to ask.

  • Thesis, fellowship, teaching and a side project share one tangled to-do list.

Each is its own workstream, with the categories, statuses and timeline you choose.

  • Conferences, committee meetings and submission dates are scattered across apps.

Events and task deadlines share one calendar, synced with Google Calendar.

  • The idea you had in March is in a notebook, a phone note or a margin somewhere.

Every idea and insight goes in a note you can find in seconds, even years later.

  • Your reading list is a pile, with no sense of what you’ve done with it.

Your Zotero library sits beside the work it feeds, always up to date.

  • Drafts live in files called “final_v7”.

Papers and chapters have a home, a status from draft to finalized, and a one-click Word export.

Everything in its place

Plan. Schedule. Think. Write. Each with a home.

Your tasks, dates, ideas, readings and drafts stop competing for space in your head — and stop living in five different apps.

Plan

Know exactly what to do next

Split every project into workstreams and tasks, then look at them the way the moment demands.

  • Board, table, week or timeline with start and due dates, dependencies, and blocked work flagged.
  • Your own categories: “Fellowship”, “Chapter 3”, “Teaching”... whatever your world is called.
  • An Overview that opens on what is overdue, due this week, in progress and blocked.

Schedule

Every date in one calendar

Events and task deadlines side by side, so a week is something you can actually see.

  • Two-way Google Calendar sync: events you add here are written back to it.
  • Attach files, links and photos to an event — the programme, the slides, the venue.
  • Optional daily or weekly email digests of what is due and what is about to start.

Think

A home for every idea and insight

A fast rich-text editor with Markdown shortcuts for field notes, hunches, reading notes and drafts-in-progress.

  • Folders, tags and full-text search that ignores accents: “acao” finds “ação”.
  • Find & replace, highlights, colours and checklists and it stays quick on notes hundreds of thousands of characters long.
  • When you want, @ links a note to a task, event or source. Never required.

Read & write

From reading list to finished paper

Keep your library next to your drafts, and track each chapter or paper from first draft to final.

  • Connect Zotero, or paste a DOI or link to add a source with its details filled in. No Zotero? Keep links to documents instead.
  • Outputs for chapters, papers and reports, with a status and a category, and export to Word (.docx).
  • Link each output to the workstreams and tasks behind it.

Find anything in seconds

Press Ctrl/⌘ + K to jump anywhere or create anything. Full-text search runs across every note.

Know what needs you today

The Overview opens on what is overdue, due this week, in progress and blocked — not on a blank page.

Never miss a deadline

Optional daily or weekly email digests of what is due and what is coming up.

Optional AI, built for researchers

An assistant that has read your work — and won’t make things up.

Most AI tools are confident about everything. For research, that’s a liability. These are built the other way round: they work only from your notes and sources, and say so when there is nothing there.

Summarize a note

A short summary of what you wrote. It condenses; it never adds an idea of its own.

Ask across all your notes

Pose a question and get an answer attributed note by note — or an honest “your notes don’t cover that”.

Find the threads

Spot notes written months apart that develop, answer or contradict each other, plus the questions you never closed.

Match notes to sources

Anchor your ideas to the literature you’ve collected, and see which claims still have no reference.

Suggest citations

Highlight a sentence in a draft and get candidates from your own library, each with how sure it is.

Sharper wording

Improve a highlighted passage in your voice. Same language, same numbers, names and citations — keep it or revert in one click.

Break down a workstream

Turn a vague goal into concrete, checkable tasks you can accept one by one.

Mind maps from your reading

Pick library items and get their themes, methods and debates drawn as a map, in the language of your sources.

Grounded in your material

It works from your notes and sources and brings in no outside knowledge. Every point is traceable to something you wrote or collected.

Honest about what it has read

It knows whether it has a paper’s full text, only its abstract, or just a title — and never claims more than that. No invented quotes, pages or findings.

Silent when there’s nothing to say

“These notes don’t connect” and “no good match” are valid answers. A short, true list beats a padded one.

Entirely opt-in

Off until you add your own OpenAI key and agree to a notice. Nothing is sent until you press an AI button, and you can withdraw consent any time.

AI features use your own OpenAI API key, billed to you by OpenAI. ScholarQuestor adds nothing on top.

Bring your own assistant

Talk to your research from Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini.

Connect once and your assistant can read and update your ScholarQuestor projects — as you, with exactly your permissions, on the plan you already pay for. No API key, no copy-pasting notes into a chat window.

  • Built on the open MCP standard, so it works with any assistant that supports custom connectors.
  • Sixty-plus actions across projects, tasks, notes, outputs, events and your library.
  • You approve the connection on a screen that spells out the access, and can revoke it instantly.
Things you can simply ask
  • “What’s overdue across my projects, and what should I deal with first?”
  • “Read my notes from this week and draft a research output that pulls the main threads together.”
  • “Which sources in my library relate to this note? Link the relevant ones.”
  • “Add this paper to my library from its DOI, then create a task to read it by Friday.”
  • “Plan next week: show me what’s due and move anything unrealistic.”

For every stage of an academic life

Whatever your title, the problem is the same.

A thesis, a fellowship, a lab, a grant: it’s all work that accumulates faster than memory can hold it.

PhD students & thesis writers

Chapters become outputs, the literature is your library, supervisor meetings are events, and the thesis stops living in forty files and a hundred browser tabs.

Postdocs & research fellows

Run the fellowship, the collaboration and the grant application side by side, each with its own deadlines, without them blurring together.

Faculty & principal investigators

Papers, supervision, teaching and grants each get a workstream, so where everything stands is one glance away.

Independent scholars & research groups

Built for one person first. When a lab, a collective or a co-writing pair needs the same plan, invite them into a project, and it will be private to the people invited.

Wherever the idea finds you

On the train, in the archive, at your desk.

Research doesn’t wait for a laptop. The whole workspace is built for phones as much as for desktops.

  • A real mobile app experience

Bottom tab bar, thumb-sized targets, and an install-to-home-screen option.

  • Light, dark or system

Easy on the eyes for long writing nights.

  • Reminders that help

Email digests for what is due soon and what is about to start.

  • Shared when you want it

Invite collaborators into a project; keep everything else private.

Your work stays yours

Built so that trusting it is easy.

Years of thinking will end up in here. These are the promises that make that safe.

Private by design

Only you and the people you invite to a project can see it. Access is enforced row by row in the database itself, not just in the interface.

No ads. No selling your data.

Your notes are not our product. There is no advertising, and what you write is never sold or used for ads.

No lock-in

Your library stays in Zotero, outputs export to Word, and you can delete your account and everything you solely own from the Account settings at any time.

You decide what AI sees

Connect your own key, consent once, and only the text behind the button you press is sent. Integration credentials are never exposed to your assistant.

Questions

Before you sign up

Is it really free?

Yes. Accounts, projects, notes, tasks, the library, calendar sync, outputs and sharing cost nothing, and there are no ads. The optional AI features run on your own OpenAI key, billed to you by OpenAI directly — ScholarQuestor adds no markup and charges nothing for AI. Connecting Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini uses the assistant plan you already have.

Do I need Zotero?

No. Zotero is optional, and so is everything else you don’t need. If you do use it, connect it with an API key and your library appears in the project; items you add here are written to Zotero first, so it remains the source of truth. Without Zotero you can keep links to documents.

Do I have to use AI?

Never. AI features are off by default. Nothing about your work is sent anywhere until you add a key, agree to the in-app notice, and press an AI button. Everything else works exactly the same without it.

Who can see my work?

Only you and the people you invite to a project. Other projects stay invisible to them, and the Don't Scroll Agency doesn’t access, sell your data or show you ads. Read the Privacy Policy for the specifics.

Is it just for me, or do I have to collaborate?

It works fully on your own. That’s how most people start. If you later want a supervisor, co-author or lab in a project, add anyone who has an account by email; everyone in the project sees the same plan. Owners can remove members at any time.

How is this different from a general notes or to-do app?

Those are blank canvases you assemble yourself. This one arrives organized for research: workstreams, tasks, a calendar, notes, a reading library and outputs — each already in its place, so you spend your time on the work instead of building a system for it.

I write in more than one language. Will it cope?

Yes. Search ignores accents, the editor works in any language, AI rewrites keep your passage in the language you wrote it (never translated), and mind maps follow the language of your sources.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The whole app is built for phones as well as desktops, with a bottom tab bar, dark mode, and an install-to-home-screen option.

Something else? Ask us.

Your research deserves order, not a folder called “final_v7”.

Give your deadlines, tasks, events, ideas and drafts one home — and start every day knowing exactly what needs you. It’s free, and it takes a few minutes to set up.
